Person(s) of Interest: Nic Conley - 3 Ideas on Sunday
I’m always getting ideas about side hustles, business ventures and new projects to explore. One of the reasons this pipeline of brain activity never stops is due to newsletters like Nic’s 3 Ideas. He does his research well and delivers interesting business ideas every week. Check out his work - It’s worth your time.
Wine: Let’s get to know an AVA!
One way to get to know wine better or to learn what you really like and what to look for when you stare at the 5000 bottles at your local shop, is to know a bit about “American Viticultural Areas” (AVA). They are designated appellations for American wine in the United States distinguishable by geographic, geologic, and climatic features, with boundaries defined by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). As of August 2023, there are 269 recognized AVAs in 34 states, with several shared by two or more states. Over half (149) of the AVAs are in California.
I’m going take the Brewstee approach here and focus on a one AVA per state, starting next week with my local - the Wisconsin Ledge. I’ll feature a few wineries, significant grapes, and maybe some cool wine merch.
Band o’the day: The Blasters - (click for the artist’s main online hub)
Real good basic rock’n’roll. The 1980 debut album sounds like it could’ve been released in 1959. But it’s not a 50’s nostalgia act. They mixed cool covers with excellent originals. If you’re looking something traditional and fun, start with the Blasters. Here’s Marie Marie from the self titled debut at Live Aid in 1985:
If you’re new here, welcome! Here at Permanent Waves, I write a little blurb about every single band and solo artist in my Spotify Artist list. This newsletter will also serve as a journal, documenting each step of creating a more purposeful life with commitments to ideas and projects I have bored all of my friends with over the past half decade. The last few years have been a blur, and I’m starting this year by working on the discipline to make the things in my head real, or at least attempt to see if they can eventually walk on their own.
See you soon!
